Repair, Restoration or Conservation?

Repairing a quilt is simply patching it to stop further damage.

Restoration is returning your quilt to a usable state. It may still be fragile and should be treated with respect for its age. It is restored with old or reproduction fabrics from the era in which it was made.

Conservation will preserve the quilt as it is, stabilizing the damage but nothing is done that can’t be reversed. Conservation is usually reserved for quilts with historical significance, such as one that was made by a President’s wife and will hang in a museum.

Displaying Your Newly Restored Quilt

Avoid rooms with poor ventilation, high humidity or extreme sun or artificial light. Choose a method that distributes the weight of the quilt, such as on an unused bed. Folded and placed at the foot of a bed is a lovely way to display your antique quilt but it should be refolded often on different lines. You can display your quilt on a chair back or quilt rack but place a pillowcase or towel between the wood and your quilt. A ‘hanging sleeve’ or ‘tube’ for a curtain rod sewn to the back of the quilt is another way of display but be sure this method is not stretching your quilt.

If you need to store your quilt in a closet, place it in an old pillowcase or sheet. NEVER store a quilt in plastic. Like you, it needs to breathe!

Care For Your Quilt

Wash a quilt ONLY if absolutely necessary. This is best left to a professional. Never, under any circumstances, dry clean a quilt. If your quilt has a musty smell, place it in a pillowcase with a new bar of Dial Bath Soap for a few days.
